each of the broken dreams you left behind
take all of your strength to not sound blue
but wait long enough and you are bound to find
something is waiting there for you
cause if it ain't one thing there's bound to be another
it's a chill in the wind or a ghost at the window
or a hole in the sole of your shoe
or the whole dang world misunderstood your laughter
if it ain't one thing then it's two
could probably wash it down with alcohol
or practice until your aim gets true
could stay up all night and still not count them all
there's probably nothing you can do
cause if it ain't one thing there's bound to be another
it's a chill in the wind or a ghost at the window
or a hole in the sole of your shoe
or the whole dang world misunderstood your laughter
if it ain't one thing then it's two
my love spends her holidays
in the backyard with a telescope
that is pointed down at the dirt
her neighbors and relatives
all remind her that the proper way
is to point it away from the earth
but that's not a convention that impresses her
cause she knows just how easily
she could look up and see many things
but they won't be what she wants the most
and that's not a reality that pleases her
and if my love cannot see me now
then what use is a telescope
that is pointed away from the earth
and if the sky won't cooperate
the telescope will continue in
its improper position
above where she's sitting now
there's a cloud that without a doubt
resembles a face she knows
and my love who is often called
by a name that when said aloud
is much like a sound she just heard
has a feeling that someone is watching her
but my love with her telescope
in the backyard that's behind her home
has to know that what she wants the most
is only an illusion, she is all alone
and if my love cannot see me now
then what use is a telescope
that is pointed away from the earth
and if the sky won't cooperate
the telescope will continue in
its improper position
about
In 2008 I wrote a song called "My love with her telescope" that was about a phenomenon we've only recently come to know as social distancing. I recorded this version of it in 2015 and have been waiting for some kind of world-wide timely-ness to present itself.
The B-side of today's release is called "If it ain't one thing then it's two." I put out a video for it last summer. I’d originally arranged these two songs to go together, and now they are together in all their upward key-changing
glory.
